Estimating Decimals

September 27th, 2011

Estimating is the last skill we need to learn in our first unit.  The video on this can seem complicated at first so I would like to offer a few bits of advice.

1) When estimating, always round first!  Do not round after you solve.

2) When Sal refers to nearest whole number, this is the same as saying “ones place” or “unit.”  They are all synonyms.

3) Do not forget about the digits to the left of the place you are rounding to.  They remain the same (unless you are rounding a 9 up).

Estimation with Decimals Video – Be sure to log in prior to watching.  Complete the exercise that follows.  You will probably need to use scrap paper.

 Enjoy.
