Oops, I forgot to mention Wednesday night the importance of every student having the 1-12 multiplication facts memorized. Almost every unit taught in fifth grade revolves around a thorough understanding of the times tables.
As students have learned the concept of multiplication in earlier grades, rote memorization is all that’s left to complete their understanding of this skill. This can be achieved with simple flash cards and most importantly, a few minutes of practice daily. I can not emphasize the importance of this skill enough, as students who gain it will improve over the year, and those who have not, will fall behind at a similar increment.
